    State of the Thing

    LibraryThing: State of the Thing
    Dear winways,

Welcome to the September 2016 State of the Thing! This month, LT turned eleven, and we're gearing up for Monday's Talk Like a Pirate Day treasure hunt. Read on for details

If you'd rather receive a plain-text version, edit your email preferences. You can also read it online. Our State of the Thing archive lives here.

You can like LibraryThing on Facebook and follow @LibraryThing on Twitter and LibraryThing on Tumblr for up-to-the-minute site news and updates.

    Ahoy! Here There Be Treasure

This Monday, join the treasure hunt! As many of you know, September 19th is an auspicious day here at LibraryThing, and one of our favorite holidays: International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Our past voyages have included translating all of LibraryThing into Pirate, lists of our favorite sea-faring media, and, in 2014, a treasure hunt.

We're resuming the quest for the Dread Pirate Spalding's buried treasure. On Monday, September 19th, at 10am Eastern, the hunt will begin. It will end 24 hours later, on Tuesday morning.

» Stay tuned to Talk to join the hunt!

Follow the link that will be posted here on Talk: https://www.librarything.com/topic/232413 to see the clues. Each clue will correspond to a page somewhere on LibraryThing. Visit one of those pages, and you'll see a message pop up indicating that you've found a piece of the treasure! Find all the pieces within 24 hours, and you'll be automatically entered into a drawing for some fabulous LibraryThing swag prizes.

So, if nautical nonsense be something you wish, brush up on your sea shanties, and climb aboard the good ship LibraryThing on Monday!

    LibraryThing Turns 11

On August 29th, LibraryThing reached its prime tweenage years. For our 11th Thingaversary, we celebrated by reflecting on the books we read and loved when we were but 11-year-olds ourselves. Come join the celebration on Talk, or go check out the list (and add your favorites!) here.

TinyCat Webinar: Wednesdays @ 1pm ET

Check out TinyCat, the online catalog for "tiny" libraries, at our free, weekly Wednesday webinars. Join us this Wednesday, September 21st, at 1pm Eastern (US). Head over to this link at that time, and look for the TinyCat Webinar.

If Wednesday at 1pm doesn't work for you, let us know—we'll be happy to schedule a session for you.

We're here to answer your TinyCat questions via email at any time: tinycat@librarything.com. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for more announcements, or see a recorded webinar from July on our YouTube Channel.

    Talk of the Thing

October spooktacular. What scares you? Let's talk (and read) all about it. Join the Category Challenge group for some seasonally appropriate scary reads this October. Check out the thread on Talk to get in on the fun.

    Free Books: Early Reviewers

You are not currently signed up for LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program. You are missing out!

Early Reviewers offers free books to members—about 100 titles a month! Since 2007, we've given out over 160,000 books. The catch? Publishes want your honest review. How you review a book won't help or hurt your chances of winning books in the future, but not reviewing your winning will.

» Sign up for Early Reviewers

The September batch of Early Reviewers books contains 3,495 copies of 124 different titles. The deadline to request a free book is Monday, September 26th at 6pm, Eastern. Look for the October batch around the 3rd.

The most requested books so far from the September batch:

    More free books: Member Giveaways

At any given time, there are hundreds of books available from our Member Giveaways program. It's like Early Reviewers, but isn't limited to select publishers—any author or member can post books. Request books, or offer your own!

    Hot titles this month

    1. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by Jack Thorne, John Tiffany, and J.K. Rowling
    2. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
    3. Uprooted by Naomi Novik
    4. A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
    5. Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
    6. Slade House by David Mitchell
    7. Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
    8. Finders Keepers by Stephen King
    9. My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante
    10. The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu

That's it for this month. I'll see you all in October!

Questions, comments, ideas? Send them my way.
