Within just two months of each other, Red Hat and IBM released independently produced white papers running ownCloud Enterprise Edition on industry-standard hardware. The results proved how quickly and easily organizations can build private and secure enterprise file sync and share and scale users into the hundreds of thousands using just industry-standard hardware.

"The testing really proves just how easy it is to scale up a private (or hybrid) cloud as quickly and easy as a public one -- and to do it more securely," said Matt Richards, the VP of Products for ownCloud. "One need only look at our work with NRW to see how this was accomplished in real life."

Red Hat and ownCloud used x86 storage servers and four standard 2-socket servers for the performance benchmark. OwnCloud Enterprise Edition and Red Hat Storage were installed and benchmarked on the first one, and then two twin storage servers, serving as converged storage and application nodes. The results show clear linear scalability when adding converged servers with a sustained load per server of 42,000 active users, demonstrating an architecture that can scale to meet the needs of hundreds of thousands of users.

According the IBM white paper, "The derived numbers for the 100,000 user scenario show a great performance and lead to the conclusion that with a single GSS, one fully equipped Flex System chassis and the ownCloud Enterprise edition it is possible to deliver a Sync & Share environment on enterprise level for more than 100,000 users."
