Oh, well, that makes sense: One of Amazon's "best books" for July is first-time author Edan Lepucki's California, a novel that is published by Hachette -- so good luck trying to pre-order it (hat tip to Publishers Lunch). Hachette and Amazon(s AMZN) are negotiating a new contract, and Amazon has taken away pre-orders on its titles as a negotiating tactic. So the hardcover, set to be published July 7, is listed as unavailable and there's no Kindle link at all on the California product page.

California is also the title that comedian and Hachette author Stephen Colbert promoted on a recent episode of The Colbert Report, saying, "We're going to prove that I can sell more books than Amazon." He referred viewers to independent bookstore Powell's to pre-order the book, and as of Tuesday it's still the top-selling book on the Powells.com website.
